Mob abducts inspector caught accepting bribe

Puri: A police inspector, who was caught by vigilance sleuths allegedly taking a bribe, was forcibly taken away from the police station by a group of unidentified people along with the bribe money, Vigilance sources said on Friday.

Bimal Ray, Inspector-in-charge of Nimapada police station in Puri district, was caught by vigilance sleuths while allegedly taking Rs 5,000 from Sanjay Mohapatra, a local resident, on Friday morning for registering a case, the sources claimed.

Inspector Ray however denied the charge of accepting bribe and alleged that he was framed by someone.

As soon as the vigilance sleuths caught Ray, a group of people forcibly entered into the police station and took away the police inspector along with the cash seized by vigilance sleuths, the officials said.

The accused police inspector has been missing since then, said Inspector General (vigilance) S K Upadhay. Action would be taken against the police officer according to the provision of the Indian Penal Code, he added.

Complainant Mohapatra who was also targetted by the mob, had been shifted from Nimapada and kept at a safe undisclosed location due to security reason, police said.
