Meet Laxmi, the five-legged wonder on Mumbai's streets

Meet Laxmi, the five-legged wonder on Mumbai's streets
Mumbai: A white cow roaming through the streets of Mumbai is not unusual. But Laxmi is. She has five legs, one of which is placed across her back.

"It has a fifth leg since birth... there's no cure," says Chandrabhaga Bhonsale, the cow's owner.

She found Laxmi, who is believed to be eight years old, near the Jagannath Temple in Puri during a visit there and brought her back to her hometown in Pandharpur in Maharashtra.

But her family recently moved to Mumbai after their crop was destroyed in the severe drought that is defeating so many farmers in Maharashtra.

Now, Chandrabhaga, struggling to earn a livelihood, begs on the streets with Laxmi constantly by her side. While the cow draws curious onlookers, Chandrabhaga doesn't consider it a deformity. "It is God's gift," she says.
