Kolkata: Gang-rape accused sent to police custody

The police have not been able to question the gang-rape survivor yet as she has been under heavy sedation.

Kolkata: One of the accused in the January 19 gang-rape in the city has been remanded in police custody till February 3 while Kolkata Police are on the lookout for the four others, a senior police official said today.

"Mohammed Hamid alias Raja, has been sent to police custody till February 3 by the court. We are on the look-out for the rest of the accused in the gang-rape case," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh said.

Hamid, a drug addict, was arrested last evening in connection with the gang-rape and had also admitted his crime, Kolkata Police Commissioner S K Purakayastha had said yesterday.

A 21-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by five-six youths in a truck, who also looted her belongings and then dropped her in a deserted place in the city on the night of January 19.

According to police, the truck in which the crime took place had been tracked down and the spot where it took place was identified.

Police are checking CCTV footage and a team of the detective department of Kolkata is looking into the case.
