Fresh flood threat looms large in Delhi again

Fresh flood threat looms large in Delhi again
Delhi: First the incessant rains that battered the city on Sunday morning  and now more water released in river Yamuna from Hathnikund barrage - the flash flood nightmare is back to haunt Delhites.

In view of the heavy rains in the hills of Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring Haryana, the in-flow of water at Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar district of Haryana has increased forcing authorities to release additional water in Yamuna river.

Around three lakh cusecs of water has been released in Yamuna, officials said on Sunday adding that the in-flow poses fresh flood threats in some pockets of Yamunanagar, Ambala, Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat district and outer areas of Delhi.

The situation was also bad in Ludhiana, Ropar, Patiala and Anandpur Sahib in Punjab as the river Sutlej is on the verge of overflowing in the wake of heavy rains in neighbouring Himachal Pardesh.

According to the Meteorological(MeT) department, Delhi received 55mm of rain on Sunday morning bringing back the waterlogging woes. More rains are expected in the coming days.

The MeT Department has also forecast moderate to heavy rains at a few places in Punjab and Haryana.
