Delhi: Registration of marriage compulsory within 60 days
New Delhi: Registration of marriage within 60 days of tying the nuptial knot will soon be made mandatory in the national capital and its non-compliance will attract a fine of Rs 1,000.

Delhi Government's Revenue Secretary Dharampal said a notification on compulsory marriage registration will be issued by next week to give effect to the decision.

The Delhi (Compulsory Registration of Marriage) Order, 2014 will be applicable to all marriages solemnized in Delhi irrespective of caste, creed and religion of the brides and grooms.

The Revenue Department of the Government will soon launch a portal to ensure a transparent and hassle free registration process for the applicants.

Dharampal said a "Tatkal" service will be introduced under which registration process will be undertaken on priority basis on payment of Rs 10,000 as fee.

"Any marriage solemnized in Delhi between a man having completed 21 years and a woman of at least 18 years of age on the date of solemnization of the marriage, with at least one of them being an Indian citizen, will have to be compulsorily registered," the order approved by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung said.

Dharampal said government has decided to make registration of marriages mandatory in compliance with a Supreme Court order in 2006.

The Delhi Government in 2012 had drafted the Delhi Registration of Marriage Bill which was sent to a Select Committee of Delhi Assembly following objections by a number of MLAs. The Bill got lapsed after the term of the Fourth Assembly expired in December last year.
