Delhi Government to Take Strict Action Against Littering from Oct 2

New Delhi: In keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of clean India, Delhi government will take action against people who are found littering and also impound vehicles parked illegally as part of its 'Swachchha Bharat Abhiyan' which will kick start from October 2.

"Strict action will be taken against the people littering the area by the Municipal Magistrate. Also, vehicles which are found parked illegally on roadsides and footpath will be impounded," said a Delhi government official.

A cleanliness awareness campaign will also be initiated as a part of the drive which will continue till October 23.

"The cleanliness drive should inspire all agencies to keep the city clean round the year, it is our duty to our fellow citizens," said Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, who held a meeting today to discuss the arrangements for the same.


The idea is also to involve the citizens, including members of RWAs, traders associations, market associations, industrial associations, youth, school children in the drive.

"Citizens should come forward and participate wholeheartedly in helping us keep the city clean," Jung said.

Commissioners of the corporations briefed Jung about the steps being taken as part of the sanitation drive.

The drive will also cover industrial areas and it is estimated that more than 600 trucks of rubble and garbage lying there will be removed during this period.

Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has been asked to make special efforts to clear garbage and rubble from its vacant plots, which are more than 1,000 in number.

It was also asked to pay particular attention to biodiversity and other parks maintained by it.

There will be special emphasise on repair and renovation of toilets, providing sewer and water connection and construction of new toilets, specially for women, said the official.

Municipal Corporations have been directed to identify open garbage dumping sites for special clean-up schedule and also augment their manpower, vehicles and other resources for this drive.

Shram Daan (community labour) will also be taken up during this period by the government staff and police personnel.

The heads of the departments and the 11 District Magistrates have been asked to be in the field for continuous supervision of the drive and initiate strict action against defacement of property through unauthorised hoardings, banners and posters.

Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has constituted a special team to prevent water leakage and sewer overflow. More than 100 sewage cleaning machines will also be put into service.

Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) was instructed to ensure that night shelters in the city are kept clean and awareness is created among the homeless.

Apart from all these steps, Jung stressed on sanitation measures in JJ clusters, removal of garbage, special cleaning of toilet complexes and spreading awareness amongst slum residents about hygiene with help of NGOs.

Commissioner, Transport, has been advised to take all necessary steps to keep the ISBTs and bus depots clean.

Besides, the Education department has been asked to focus on sanitation of school toilets, especially those meant for girls. It was also asked to actively involve the local community and the school management committees for this purpose.

Health department will also coordinate with hospitals to ensure cleanliness at their premises.

Tourism Department was advised to ensure cleanliness of tourist spots, Dilli Haats and its other properties in the city.

Jung asked all departments concerned to submit an action taken report to the Chief Secretary, who in turn shall monitor their compliance and oversee the drive.
