New Delhi: Delhi government together with the city police and other departments organised a series of events to mark the 'International Day of Older Persons'.

As part of the celebrations, a city police constable escorted the elderly to the nearest health camp organised in the vicinity.

The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) carried messages through posters on buses appealing to people to protect the interests of the elderly in the society.

Elderly people were also allowed free entry to the three Dilli Haats at Janakpuri, INA and Pitampura.

There were celebrations at various homes for elderly people and Vridhashrams.

The Social Welfare and Women and Child Development department, in collaboration with the Avaa Surya Continental Hotel, organised a function to felicitate the elderly.

Principal Secretary, Social Welfare and Woman and Child Development, Satbir Bedi expressed concern over the plight of elderly persons, saying they are ill treated by their own family members leading to a life of neglect and isolation.

"We have to sensitise the society toward senior citizens. We should ensure their protection, security, their health and fitness and give them full respect as they are the store-house of knowledge and experience. Aging is a part of life and no one can escape this transition," she said.
