New Delhi: A carjacking bid went wrong for the assailants when they accidentally shot dead one of their associates in outer Delhi's Begumpur area on Wednesday morning.

Lobh Singh, a resident of Begumpur, was driving, when three man sought to take a lift from him; he obliged.

"As they got in, one of them pulled out a pistol and asked him to leave the car. As Singh resisted, one of them fired at him. The bullet, however accidentally hit their associate Satish in his head," said a police officer.

Sensing an opportunity, Mr Singh fled from the car while the robbers drove away.

They then took a halt in Rohini, and called the cops to inform them that an unidentified youth has been shot dead in the area, following which they abandoned the car with the body and fled.

When the police reached the spot, they found Satish dead.

Meanwhile, Mr Singh informed the police about the incident.

"When police checked Satish's background, they realised that he was involved in several criminal cases in the past," the officer said .

A case of murder has been registered at Begumpur police station and a search for the robbers is on, police said.
