Coimbatore: Dejected over being admonished by the principal and her class teacher for taking long leave, a 20 year-old girl student of a private women's college here allegedly committed suicide by consuming poisonous cowdung powder.
The second year BCA student had returned to college yesterday after two weeks' leave following which the class teacher sought the reason for her unauthorised absence and asked her to bring her parents.
Her mother came and gave an explanation during which the principal and Head of the Department, reportedly admonished the student over the leave, police said.
Dejected she consumed the cowdung powder last night. Her mother rushed her to the government hospital, but she died en route, police said.
Angry relatives resorted to picketing near the hospital and demanded immediate action against the management. Based on their complaint, cases were registered against the principal and HoD, they said.
College sources said the girl was irregular in attending classes and lacked attendance. The principal had just advised her and taken an explanation for the reason for absence.
