Butcher's knife used to attack girl who fought rape

Fatehpur/Lucknow: A 16-year-old Dalit girl was seriously injured when three men chopped off her nose, ear and a part of her hand after she resisted a rape attempt in Bindaki area, a senior officer said on Sunday.

The girl was rushed to the district hospital from where she was referred to Kanpur in a serious condition.

The National Commission for Women has taken serious note of the incident. Chairperson Girija Vyas told NDTV she will write to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and as her to look into the case personally.

"She should fast track such cases and make sure culprits, at least those who are named, should be arrested within 7 days," said Vyas.

The three men identified as Shivom, Hari Shanker and Pawan forcibly dragged the girl, when she had gone out for some work in the field and tried to rape her late Saturday evening, Superintendent of Police Ram Bharose said.

He said that the girl resisted the rape attempt and raised alarm following which the trio chopped off her nose, ear and a part of hand using a butcher's knife.

The SP said that an FIR has been lodged against Shivom, Hari Shanker and Ram Ratan in this connection and one of them has been arrested.

Meanwhile, Lucknow Special Additional Director General of Police Brij Lal said that the girl had sustained serious injuries in her head and face.

"Badlu Ram Pasi informed at Bindki police station that Shivom attempted to forcibly drag his daughter in the field and when she resisted, he along with Hari Shanker and his brother-in-law Ram Ratan attacked the girl with sharp-edged weapon injuring her seriously," he said.

He said that on the basis of the complaint, an FIR under section 354 (outraging modesty of a woman), 307 (attempt to murder) and 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) has been lodged.

"The girl, who is undergoing treatment in Kanpur, has told the investigating officer that other than Shivom, two more persons Numbari and Shiv Balak were involved in the attack and has not named Hari Shanker and Ram Ratan," Brij Lal said.
