Hyderabad: A special bus of the state-run transport corporation that was taking passengers to Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport caught fire in the early hours today. The passengers and driver escaped unhurt.

The bus running from Secunderabad to Shamshabad, called the 'Pushpak-Airport liner' was on its way to the airport when it caught fire at 1:10 am near Aaramghar Crossroads, in the Rajendranagar Police Station limits.

Four passengers were on the bus, other than the driver, who reportedly noticed some smoke coming out and alerted the passengers to get off the bus. Very quickly flames engulfed the bus and it was gutted. Police suspect that a short-circuit may have sparked off the fire in the air-conditioned bus.

The news of the bus catching fire brought back memories of similar accidents, the closest at Palem in Mahbubnagar district, where on October 30th, a Volvo bus caught fire in the early hours, and with the doors jammed, all the passengers were trapped inside. 45 people died in the horrific accident.
