Betting syndicate smashed in Delhi

New Delhi: A betting syndicate was smashed in the national capital with the arrest of five property dealers, the fourth such case in the past one week after the World Cup cricket began.

The syndicate was operating during the world cup cricket match between India and England in the posh area of East of Kailash, Ashok Chand, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), told reporters here.

"They were not taking bets directly but bets were being taking on their behalf by 32 bookies at different places in Delhi. Thirty two mobile phones were being used as 'dabbas' for broadcasting of rates to the bookies," he said.

He said they took the bet rates from a website www.betfare.com. They were also using software 'back N lay PRO' for calculating their profit and loss.

"The match summary report of total betting till the time of the raid was Rs. 1.35 crore," Chand said.

The arrested have been identified as Kuldeep Jain (32), Suresh Chand Jain (42), Manoj Jain (39), Avdhesh Sharma (44) and Ajay Jain (34).

"They were operating during cricket match between India and England on Sunday. We got a tip off and raided the place. Two laptops, 38 mobile phones, a calculator, two TVs, a cassette recorder and 5 notebooks having bets were recovered. The apprehension of above persons was a major breakthrough as the crime branch was able to nab the organizers of the betting syndicate," Chand said.

Kuldeep, Ajay, Suresh Chand and Manoj hail from Morena in UP while Avdhesh is from Mathura. Ajay also owns a pan shop in South Extension.
