Mumbai: Eighteen-year-old Payal Gupte, a first year arts student at the Mithibai college, was attacked in Vile Parle on Sunday, police said.
Payal was assaulted by unidentified men wearing black shirts on her head and hands, they said.
She has been admitted to Cooper Hospital. According to the police, she is believed to be a distant relative of Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray.
Payal was involved with Mithibai college's cultural festival, 'Kshitij', police added.
A case has been filed at the DN Nagar police station, and the attacker has been identified by the police.
The attacker, a resident of Nehru Nagar slum colony in Kurla is said to be mentally unstable.
