Kolkata: The West Bengal government Monday started paying compensation to the family members of the victims of AMRI hospital fire which left 93 people dead.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced compensation of Rs 300,000 for the family members of the victims. On Monday, family members of 29 victims were handed over the cheques at the Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar.

Family members of some of the victims decided to use the money for legal expenses.

"I have decided to use the compensation money to fight the case in the court of law so that the justice can be delivered," said a family member of a victim.

Kolkata saw its worst fire incident in a hospital in December 2011, when 93 people, mostly patients, choked to death due to toxic smoke in the a pre-dawn fire at the AMRI Hospital.
