24 hours after their rescue, police trying to determine why Rohini sisters starved themselves

New Delhi24 hours after they were rescued from their home, the severely malnourished Mamta and Nirja Gupta are being fed and responding to medication given to them. Mamta, the older of the two sister remains serious but out of danger. She weighs just 15 kilos.

On Saturday the two sisters were pulled out of their home in north Delhi's Rohini area, dishevelled, dehydrated and malnourished after they had locked themselves inside their house for the last six months.

The police and doctors are still trying to find out why the duo had starved like that. Ironically the sisters live with their mother and Mamta's 15-year-old son, who appear to be physically fine.

Their condition emerged after concerned neighbours called an NGO to pull them out after a strong stench emanated from their house. They were rescued and rushed to the Ambedkar Hospital.

Doctors say it's a case of negligence and are trying to determine whether the starvation and confinement was forced or if the women suffer some psychological disorder.
