World Leaders, Business Heads, Diaspora And Global Citizens - PM Modi is to Meet All During US Trip

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the General Debate at the UNGA.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin his five-day maiden visit to the United States from September 26. He will attending the 69th United Nations General Assembly in New York and then fly to Washington for a bilateral meeting with President Barack Obama. He will be accompanied by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh. Today, the Ministry of External Affairs unveiled the Prime Minister's plans.

Here is your 10-point cheatsheet to the story:

  1. Prime Minister Modi will have more than 35 engagements spread over four days. He will reach New York on September 26 and spend two days there. September 27 will begin with a visit to the 9/11 Memorial and then the PM will attend the UNGA.

  2. Before his address, PM Modi will meeting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. The two are expected to discuss the expansion and reformation of the UN Security Council and India's permanent membership in it. India is trying to get a permanent seat before 2015.

  3. Later, the Prime Minister will participate in the General Debate, the MEA said. The theme of the debate is "Delivering on and implementing a transformative post-2015 development agenda".

  4. This will be followed by bilateral meetings. On the "principle of neighbours first", the Prime Minister will meet the leaders from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. But no meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is apparently on the anvil.

  5. While in New York, PM Modi will also meet former US President Bill Clinton and his wife, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo, Governor of South Carolina Niki Haley and Governor of Maryland Martin O'Malley.

  6. The PM will spend September 29 and 30 in Washington, where he will meet President Barack Obama and various representatives of the US government. On September 29, he will attend a private dinner hosted by President Obama.

  7. The Prime Minister will also make several public addresses during the trip and interact with the civil society, diaspora and the business community. The first of these will be on September 27, when he attends the Global Citizens' Festival.

  8. The same day, PM Modi will also address the Indian diaspora at the Madison Square Garden and meet a select group of 10 persons of Indian origin. On September 28, he will meet the representatives of the Sikh community in North America.

  9. During his visit, the Prime Minister will also meet key business leaders. On September 29, he will have a breakfast meeting with CEOs from 11 companies including Google, Pepsi,  Mastercard, Carlyle Group, Citigroup and Merck.

  10. On September 30, The US-India Business Council will host a reception for PM Modi in Washington, where he is expected to meet around 400 businessmen. He is also to hold one-on-one meetings with CEOs of six key US companies - Boeing, Black Rock, IBM, General Electric, Goldman Sachs and KKR.
