My Road Trip to Kathmandu Made Officials Nervous: PM Narendra Modi

Kathmandu: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the SAARC summit in Kathmandu today. The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) has eight member countries including India and Pakistan.

Here are 10 big quotes from his speech:

  1. When we speak of SAARC, we hear two reactions: cynicism and scepticism. I am sorry to say that. This is sadly in a region which is throbbing with the optimism of our youth. We must work to change cynicism into optimism.

  2. I know India has to lead and it will do it its part.

  3. It's still harder to travel within our region than Bangkok and Singapore and more expensive to talk to each other.

  4. Nowhere in the world are collective efforts more urgent than in South Asia.

  5. At SAARC, we have failed to move with the speed which our people expect.

  6. A good neighbourhood is universal aspiration, nowhere in world are collective efforts urgent than in South Asia.

  7. We are stuck behind the walls of our differences... hesitant to move out from shadows of past.

  8. My decision to travel to Kathmandu by road made many officials nervous because of the poor conditions of roads. Infrastructure is my biggest priority.

  9. We speak of ease of doing business in India... our facilities at the border will speed up, not slow down. India will give business visas for 3-5 years for SAARC countries.

  10. Let's all make our procedures simple, our facilities better, our standards common and our paper work less burdensome.
