Dense Fog Disrupts Flights, Trains in Delhi; Biting Cold Claims 16 Lives in Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi: Dense fog continues to disrupt air and rail traffic in Delhi as over 60 flights and 100 trains were delayed today. 16 people have died in Uttar Pradesh as the entire northern region reels under an intense cold wave with the mercury dipping to freezing point at several places.

Here are the latest developments:

  1. 19 flights were cancelled at the Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi as visibility dropped to below 50 metres in the morning, according to the MeT office. 30 trains have also been rescheduled.

  2. The minimum temperature in the national capital this morning was 4.5 degrees Celsius, considerably higher than Sunday's 2.6 degrees which was the lowest recorded in the last five years.

  3. "There was dense fog in the morning, but the day will be clear. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 20 degrees Celsius," said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

  4. In Uttar Pradesh, icy winds coupled with dense fog have disrupted normal life. 16 deaths were reported in the state on Monday.

  5. Amritsar registered the coldest night of the season yesterday as the mercury plummeted to zero degrees, three degrees below normal, according to MeT officials.

  6. Bone-chilling cold conditions also prevailed in other parts of Punjab and in neighbouring Haryana.

  7. Jammu and Kashmir too continues to reel under intense cold conditions with the mercury in the state's summer capital Srinagar settling at minus 7 degrees Celsius today. Kargil was the coldest place in the state on Monday, recording a low of minus 15.6 degrees Celsius.

  8. The night temperatures in the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region continued to remain several degrees below the freezing point.

  9. In the west, cold wave also gripped the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra with temperatures in Nagpur dropping to five degree Celsius on Monday, the lowest recorded in 45 years.

  10. In Rajasthan, too, cold and foggy conditions continued unabated with as many as 16 trains running behind schedule on Monday.
