Telugu Desam wants panel looking into land allotment be reconstituted

Hyderabad: Alleging that rules and traditions of the Assembly were violated while forming the House Committee to enquire into land allotments, Telugu Desam President N Chandrababu Naidu today demanded that the Speaker reconstitute the panel.

"The committee was not set up in line with accepted norms. Principle of proportional representation was not followed. It is shocking that members were nominated without consulting political parties which is unprecedented in the annals of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly," he alleged in a letter to Speaker Nadendla Manohar.

The assurance given in the House that the terms of reference of the Committee would be finalised after convening a meeting of floor leaders was also not kept, he claimed.

"As against this, now the Bulletin contains very vague terms of the committee which will ultimately defeat the very purpose of forming the House Committee," Naidu said.

He demanded that the House Committee be reconstituted adhering to the tradition of proportionate representation to each party in the House and that political parties be consulted regarding the nomination of members and the terms of reference.

The state government has formed the committee to enquire into land allotments made between 2004 and 2009 by the government.

The Y S Rajasekhara Congress has objected to keeping the probe restricted to this period (when the late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was Chief Minister) and demanded that land allotments made during the preceding Telugu Desam Party regime also be enquired into.
