More Sinning In Andhra Means Richer Temples, Quips Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu

Hyderabad: Economic slowdown? Not for temples in Andhra Pradesh. A 27 per cent increase over last year in collections at shrines is natural, said Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu: "People are committing sins and to get rid of them, they are going to temples and offering money."

Andhra Pradesh is home to the Tirumala temple, one of the richest in the world.

The Chief Minister's banter came as he met district collectors from across the state and urged them to ensure that Andhra Pradesh counts among the top three states by 2022 and number one by 2029 for landing foreign investment.

Mr Naidu pointed out to the top bureaucrats that the state is earning less money now from alcohol than it used to.

"More people are taking (Sabarimala) Ayyapa Swamy 'deeksha' and abstaining from liquor consumption for 40 days. To that extent our liquor sales are going down," he quipped.

Till 2024, Andhra Pradesh will share the IT hub of Hyderabad as its capital with Telangana, India's youngest state. Mr Naidu has begun developing the region of Amaravati as the new capital with elaborate plans for road and rail links. Singapore has been tasked with planning the area.
