Allahabad:

Two days after, a police sub inspector shot dead a lawyer inside Allahabad District Court, the police have arrested him from a city railway station. Sub Inspector Shailendra singh was preparing to leave the city when he was arrested, say police.

Sources say, under pressure from the lawyers, the state government also initiated a CBI inquiry into the matter. Following the incident, while the lawyers have boycotted work across the state since the last two days, Bar Council of India has declared a strike on March 16.

The Director General of Police and the Home Secretary met the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court, and assured him that strict action will be taken in the matter.

Chief Justice, HL Dattu in New Delhi said "I am hopeful that the issue will be resolved. I will my self go to Allahabad if need be and request lawyers not to go on strike"

On Wednesday, Mr Singh fired his gun after lawyers threatened to beat him up following an altercation. The incident took place when he brought a criminal to the court for hearing. The argument reportedly led to Mr Singh's manhandling who is then alleged to have fired with his service weapon at Advocate Nabi Ahmad, from a close range.

"According to some advocates present at the time of the incident, the officer open-fired in self-defense when some lawyers threatened him," Mrityunjay Mishra, Allahabad Police Spokesperson, had told reporters.

Yesterday, angry lawyers torched vehicles, resorted to violence at the Allahabad District Court and the High Court, and blocked traffic on the highway. Ten people were injured when the police resorted to the use of batons to disperse the enraged crowd.

Mr Singh has been sent to Naini prison and will be produced in the court tomorrow.
