Gujarat University to get Narmada water, and go green

Ahmedabad: Soon, Gujarat University students will be able to drink water from the Narmada river. The University Grants Commission (UGC) today approved a loan of Rs20 lakh for the university. This grant by the UGC, also known as 'supplementary grant', will be used in developing key infrastructure facilities in the university's campus.

GU will use this grant in projects such as solar power, water supply, safety equipment and bio-degradation measures for garbage disposal. Apart from installing a pipeline for Narmada water, a gas pipeline will also be installed.

The university has become the fifth in the country to receive a supplementary grant. While allotting the grant, the UGC took into account the quality of work undertaken by the university in the past, as well as utilisation of previous funds. Very few universities have managed to fulfil these criteria.

The grant is also given to encourage universities to turn 'green' by adopting eco-friendly measures. To turn the GU premises into a green campus, the administration will install solar panels to light up the hostel, guest house and pathways of the university in the near future.
