Ahmedabad BMW hit-and-run: car owner arrested, two dead

Ahmedabad: The owner of a BMW which caused a fatal hit-and-run in Ahmedabad has been arrested. The black BMW was registered in the name of Vismay Shah, whose father Amit Shah, is a local eye surgeon.

Vismay, who is 27 years old, was allegedly driving the car on Sunday night when it hurtled first into a motorcycle, flinging its two riders into the air, before crashing into a tree. Vismay abandoned the car and ran away, said an eyewitness.

The man riding pillion on the bike, Shivam Dave, died within minutes; the driver Rahul Patel died this morning.

Chilling CCTV footage from a shopping complex nearby showed the collision and the bikers being thrown in the air.

Dr Shah had said his driver was at the wheel of the BMW and was absconding.

But Lalit Gupta, who saw the accident, said the man who abandoned the BMW spoke in English to him and was dressed in expensive clothes.

Mr Gupta was friends with the two men on the motorcycle. A group of them had gone out for dinner and were heading home when the accident took place.

Police say the BMW was speeding at about 150 kms per hour.
