Ahmedabad: In yet another attack on policemen in Ahmedabad, two constables were injured when associates of two men - arrested in connection with a prohibition case - barged into a police station on Wednesday night and attacked the cops with sticks and sharp edged weapons.

Police officials said the two accused - Ramesh Gohil and Sailesh Makwana - were arrested by Sheherkotda police in the walled city area on Wednesday after alcohol was found in their possession.

At around 1 am, around 15-20 men barged into the police station seeking their release. They alleged that the duo had been falsely implicated, police said.

"When the policemen on duty tried to push back the intruders there was a scuffle and right outside the police station gate the assailants injured two constables - Jitendra Mehta and Manu Parmar - with sharp-edged weapons and fled away from  the spot," said Joint police commissioner RR Bhagat.

The police later managed to arrest the man who led the group; efforts are on to trace the others.

This is the second incident of attack on the police in Ahmedabad in just two weeks. A constable was earlier murdered right inside the city crime branch office by an accused during questioning, raising questions over the security in sensitive installations.

"We are concerned about these incidents, but when we are dealing with anti-social elements the risk factor is there," said Mr Bhagat.
